Ukrainian Scientists Who Changed the World
Explore the achievements of Ihor Sikorskyi and Borys Paton while building your reading, vocabulary, and writing skills step-by-step.
Reading Text
Read carefully before answering the tasks below
Ukraine has given the world many famous scientists, and two of the most inspiring are Ihor Sikorskyi and Borys Paton. Their work was very different, but both men showed creativity and intelligence, and they made scientific achievements from Ukraine known around the world.
Ihor Sikorskyi
Ihor Sikorskyi was born in Kyiv in 1889. At a very young age, he learnt about the work of Leonardo da Vinci from his mother. He became especially interested in the flying machines da Vinci designed. As a young man, Sikorskyi built small models of flying machines and dreamt of creating real ones.
Later in 1909, and again in 1910, he designed and built his first helicopters. Although these helicopters couldn't lift people off the ground, his later designs changed modern transport and helped people understand that machines could fly in new ways. Sikorskyi also worked on planes, but it was his helicopters that made him famous. Today, when people see a helicopter, many remember that a Ukrainian scientist was one of the first to make this dream possible.
Borys Paton
Borys Paton was born in 1918 in Kyiv. He became one of the leading experts in welding – melting different materials, especially metal, and then joining them together. Welding is used in many industries, for things like building bridges and ships, and even creating medical equipment.
Because of Paton’s work, which includes over 400 inventions, the safety, speed and quality of many pieces of technology has been improved. One of his greatest achievements, however, was developing ways to use welding in space. Imagine astronauts fixing equipment far above the Earth, using techniques designed by a Ukrainian scientist!
Both Sikorskyi and Paton are symbols of Ukrainian creativity and talent. Sikorskyi showed the world how imagination and engineering could change transport, while Paton proved that science could help in areas from building to space travel and medicine. They are part of Ukraine’s identity, reminding people everywhere that Ukrainians have played a very important role in the development of science and technology.
Vocabulary & Fact Check

Grammar & Contextual Mastery
Task 2.1: Choose the correct option according to the text.
1. What inspired Ihor Sikorskyi in his childhood?
2. In which fields is welding applied, as mentioned in the text?
Task 2.2: Fill in the missing verb forms (Past Simple / Present Perfect).
1. Sikorskyi in Kyiv in 1889.
2. Although his early models couldn't lift people, his work later modern transport.
3. Paton that welding technology can save lives and assist astronauts.
4. Up to the present day, Ukrainian scientists a vital role in global technological progress.
Text Analysis & Synthesis
Sample Answer 1: Even though his early designs couldn't lift people off the ground, Sikorskyi proved that new flight principles were possible. His later helicopters completely transformed aviation and modern transportation systems.
Sample Answer 2: Paton's 400+ inventions improved the speed, quality, and safety of manufacturing in industries such as building bridges, constructing ships, manufacturing medical equipment, and welding structures in outer space.
